future proof cloud environment

Due to growth in cloud adoption, Lely experienced a proliferation of cloud initiatives and environments. The manufacturer of robots and data systems for dairy farming therefore needed an improvement: a clear cloud environment. Together with the Cloud Engineers and Architects of Lely, the consultants of One Zero IT decomplicated Lely’s cloud problem and built a future- and growth-proof solution based on Zero Trust. One in which security and automation are paramount.

The result

With the new cloud environment, Lely is experiencing the following benefits:

• A scalable and future-proof solution aimed at international growth;
• Less manual work by applying automation when creating new, well-secured environments;
• Increased security by creating one central place where all traffic enters and is inspected through firewalling, among other things.

The approach

Together with the client, the current cloud environment and the wishes and requirements for a new environment were mapped out. With the information collected, a “baseline” could be established. Because security comes first, a Zero Trust Model was chosen. This model optimally monitors security based on the principle ”never trust, always verify”. A Hub-Spoke network design for Azure provides the basic solution for Lely’s growing cloud environment. The segmentation of applications and business units creates small ”islands” that can be easily disconnected.

Also useful to know

Some components of the cloud environment are: Azure Firewall and Azure Application Gateways to unlock services deployed on Kubernetes clusters. These techniques align best with Lely’s desire for an Azure native solution: one based on Microsoft technology and therefore easier to integrate with Microsoft’s other services. Terraform building blocks are set up to create new environments automatically and using CI/CD.
